Tabernash
24" x 24"
Acrylic on Canvas
Ready-to-hang
Tabernash captures a moment suspended in tension and atmosphere, where beauty and foreboding meet on the Colorado landscape.
This piece was directly inspired by the history of Tabernash, a Ute Native whose life ended tragically at the hands of settlers. He rides forward, his figure calm and resolute, yet his approach toward faceless cowboys radiates an uneasy stillness, as if he moves toward an inevitable confrontation. The mountains behind him, more influenced by Yosemite, are a reminder of the natural beauty and heritage overshadowed by violence and misunderstanding. This blend of serenity and suspense invites the viewer to reflect on a moment in history both haunting and unresolved, where nature’s majesty stands as both witness and participant in the unfolding human story.
50% of the proceeds will be donated to the non-profit GCHA (Grand County Historical Association) who had previously used funds to research and excavate where Tabernash was buried, to no avail. Their administrative team provided me with many of the archived photos I used to create this piece.
