The Discovery places a deer skull at the center of a familiar but unsettled landscape; a quiet high desert noir from the opening scene in No Country for Old Men where Llewelyn stumbles upon the aftermath of violence and a briefcase full of money. The deer skull functions as both witness and relic. I chose to use a native mule deer rather than the pronghorn he was hunting as I wanted the longer antlers they bear to emphasize the vast sky.
Like much of the American West, the scene exists between narrative and myth. Violence and opportunity are embedded in the landscape, but rarely presented all at once. In The Discovery, the question isn't what happened but more what it means to arrive too late.
